There’s so much advice out there about showing up online. Post every day. Show your face. Share your story. Build your brand. And I believe in being seen. I believe your work deserves to be seen.
But somewhere along the way, visibility started to feel like performance to me. Like I had to be “on” all the time. Polished, positive, perfectly lit.
I don’t want to perform. I want to be seen. If you’ve felt that tension too, let’s talk about it.
The Difference Between Performing and Being Seen
Performing is when you’re shaping yourself around what you think people want. Being seen is when you share what’s true and let people respond however they will.
Performing is exhausting because it’s never finished. There’s always another angle, another trend, another version to try on. Being seen is lighter. You only have to be one person: yourself.
What Honest Visibility Looks Like
- Share the process, not just the result. The messy drafts, the doubts, the things you’re still figuring out.
- Talk the way you actually talk. If you wouldn’t say it to a friend, you don’t have to write it in a caption.
- Show up on your own schedule. Consistency matters, but your consistency doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s.
- Say what you believe. Even if not everyone agrees. Especially then.
- Let quiet seasons be quiet. Stepping back for a while isn’t disappearing.
Why It Matters
When we perform, we attract people who like the performance. When we’re honest, we attract people who like us. That’s the community worth building, the one that will stay when the trends change.
A Prompt to Try
What’s something true about my work or my life that I’ve been afraid to share?
You don’t have to post it today. Just write it down. Notice how it feels to see it on the page. That’s the first step to being seen as you really are.
The world needs the real you, not the polished version. I hope you let her be seen.
