How to Start a Prayer Journal

A prayer journal can deepen your faith and help you see how far you've come. Here's a simple way to begin, even if you're not sure what to write.

Some days prayer feels like the most natural conversation in the world. Other days I sit down, close my eyes, and my mind wanders off to the grocery list before I finish the first sentence. Can you relate?

Writing my prayers down has quietly changed my faith life. It slows me down and keeps me honest. If you’ve been curious about keeping a prayer journal, let me walk you through a gentle way to begin.

Why Write Your Prayers?

It keeps you focused. When I write, my thoughts slow down to the speed of my pen. It’s harder to drift.

It helps you remember. Months later, I can look back and see prayers that were answered, sometimes in ways I didn’t recognize at the time.

It makes room for honesty. On paper I can be completely real about my fears, my frustrations and my hopes.

What You Need

A notebook, a pen and a few quiet minutes. That’s all. Some people like dedicated prayer journals with prompts. Others prefer a plain notebook. Use whatever makes you want to sit down.

A Simple Structure to Try

If a blank page feels intimidating, try writing in four parts:

  1. Praise. Something about God you’re grateful for today.
  2. Thanks. Specific blessings from your week, big or small.
  3. Honesty. What’s heavy on your heart. Where you’ve fallen short. What you’re struggling with.
  4. Requests. For yourself and for the people you love.

You don’t have to use this every time. It’s just a doorway in.

Add Scripture

I often write down a verse that’s speaking to me and pray through it, line by line. Psalms are a wonderful place to start. They’re full of every emotion, joy, grief, doubt and praise, often in the same chapter.

Leave Room for Answers

Leave a little margin next to your requests. When a prayer is answered, go back and write the date and what happened. Over time, those notes become a record of faithfulness you can return to on the hard days.

There’s no wrong way to do this. Just begin. Write Dear Lord at the top of the page and see what follows.

I’m praying that this becomes a sweet, steady place for you, somewhere to bring your whole heart, just as it is.
