Planning a Solo Day Trip Close to Home

If you know me, you know I love to travel. But here’s a little secret: not every adventure needs a passport. Some of the sweetest solo days can be an hour or two from home, in places you’ve driven past for years without ever stopping.

A solo day trip is such a lovely way to practice traveling on your own, try something new, and come home feeling like you’ve been somewhere. Let me show you how I’d plan one.

Pick Your Destination

Look at a map and draw a circle about two hours from home. What’s inside it? A small town with a historic main street. A beach. A state park. A museum you’ve always meant to visit. A farm stand or orchard.

Choose something that sparks a little curiosity. That’s enough.

Plan Lightly

The beauty of a day trip is that it doesn’t need much planning. I usually decide on:

  • One anchor activity, the main thing I want to see or do.
  • One place to eat, ideally somewhere local.
  • A loose window for wandering, no agenda.

Leave room for surprises. The best part of the day is often something you didn’t plan.

Pack the Essentials

  • Water and a snack
  • Phone charger
  • Comfortable shoes
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen or a light jacket depending on the weather
  • A small notebook for writing down what you notice

Stay Safe and Comfortable

Let someone know where you’re going and roughly when you’ll be home. Keep your phone charged. Trust your instincts if a place doesn’t feel right. Travel alone with confidence, but also with common sense.

Be Present

Put your phone away for stretches of the day. Eat slowly. Talk to the person at the shop. Sit on a bench and watch the world go by. Traveling solo, even for a day, gives you the rare chance to follow your own curiosity without compromise.

When you get home, write a few lines about the day. You might be surprised how much it refreshed you, and how soon you start planning the next one.

I hope you go, friend. Take yourself somewhere new, eat something delicious, and come home a little lighter. You deserve a day that’s all yours.
