A Five-Minute Journal Habit for Busy Mornings

No time to journal? Here's the five-minute morning practice I use on rushed days: three short prompts, one notebook, and no pressure to be perfect.

I hear it all the time: “I’d love to journal, but I just don’t have the time.” And honestly? I get it. Some mornings the day starts running before my feet even touch the floor.

But after all these years of keeping a journal, here’s what I know for sure: it doesn’t have to be long to matter. Five minutes is plenty. Some mornings, those five minutes are everything.

Keep It Where You Can See It

The biggest change I made was moving my notebook out of the nightstand drawer and onto the kitchen counter, right next to the coffee maker. While the water heats up, the notebook is right there. No hunting for it, no excuses.

Pick a spot you pass every morning. Leave a pen with it. Make it easy for yourself.

My Three Five-Minute Prompts

I don’t write pages. I answer three questions, a sentence or two each:

  1. How am I feeling right now, honestly? Not how I should feel. How I actually feel. Tired, hopeful, anxious, calm. Naming it takes the edge off.
  2. What’s one thing that would make today feel good? Keep it small and doable. A walk at lunch. Calling my sister. Finishing one task I’ve been avoiding.
  3. What can I let go of today? A worry, an expectation, a to-do that can wait until tomorrow.

That’s it. Close the notebook and go on with your day.

Don’t Aim for Pretty

My morning pages are messy. Half-sentences, crossed-out words, the occasional coffee ring. That’s fine. This isn’t a journal for anyone else to read. It’s a moment to check in with yourself before the rest of the world gets a turn.

If You Miss a Day

You will. I do too. Missing a day isn’t failing, it’s just life. The notebook will be right where you left it tomorrow, ready when you are.

Five minutes. Three questions. One small promise to yourself. Try it for a week and see how your mornings start to feel different.

Your mornings deserve a little tenderness. I hope these five minutes become a small gift you give yourself every day.
