Have you ever come home from a trip and realized the little details are already slipping away? The name of that sweet café. What the air smelled like on the first morning. The thing the taxi driver said that had you laughing all the way to the hotel.
As a girl with island roots and a love for being on the road, those are the memories I never want to lose. Photos show what a place looked like. A travel journal holds what it felt like to be there. And it only takes ten minutes a day.
Pick a Small Notebook
Choose something light enough to toss in your day bag, with a cover that can handle sand and the occasional spilled drink. Bring a pen you love. That’s all you need.
The Ten-Minute Routine
Each evening, before bed or over a drink on the balcony, I answer these:
- Three things I saw. Not the big landmarks. The small details. Laundry drying on a line. A dog asleep in a doorway. The color of the water at noon.
- One thing I tasted. Write the name if you know it. Describe it if you don’t.
- One conversation. Something someone said, a kindness, a funny moment.
- How I felt today. Rested, overwhelmed, brave, homesick. All of it belongs.
- One thing I want to remember. If you only had one line, what would it be?
Add the Little Extras
Tuck a receipt, a ticket stub or a pressed flower between the pages. Sketch the view, even if you can’t draw. These scraps turn a notebook into a keepsake.
Why It’s Worth It
Travel has a way of showing us who we are when we’re out of our routines. Writing it down helps you notice that, not just the places you visited, but how you grew while you were there.
Years from now, you’ll open that notebook and be right back on that balcony, the sea breeze on your face. Ten minutes a day is a small price for that.
Safe travels, friend. I hope your next trip is full of moments worth writing down.
