A few years ago I gave up on New Year’s resolutions. I still wanted something to guide me, though. Something lighter than a list, but steadier than a passing mood.
That’s when I started choosing a word for the year, and I’ve loved it ever since. Grab a cup of something warm and let’s find yours.
Why One Word Works
A word doesn’t come with a deadline. You can’t fail it in February. Instead, it becomes a lens you look through when you’re making decisions, big and small.
Should I take on this project? Does it fit my word? Should I say yes to this invitation? Does it move me toward my word or away from it?
It’s a gentle compass, not a scorecard.
How to Find Your Word
Set aside twenty minutes with your journal and work through these prompts:
- How do I want to feel at the end of this year?
- What drained me most last year?
- What do I want more room for?
- If my life had a theme song this year, what would it be about?
Then read back what you wrote and circle any words that jump out at you. Make a short list. Say each one out loud. Your word is usually the one that makes you feel a little bit braver, or a little bit calmer.
Some words to get you started: Steady. Open. Rooted. Bold. Gentle. Enough. Rise. Rest. Return. Expand.
Keep It Close
A word only works if you remember it. Here’s how I keep mine in view:
- Write it on the first page of your journal.
- Set it as your phone wallpaper.
- Put a sticky note on your bathroom mirror.
- Check in once a month: where did I live my word this month? Where did I forget it?
Let It Surprise You
The funny thing about a word for the year is that it often means something different by December than it did in January. That’s part of the magic. Let it grow with you.
So, what’s your word going to be?
I can’t wait to hear what you choose. Whatever your word is, I hope it holds you gently all year long.
