There’s a place in life that nobody likes to talk about. Not the ending, and not the new beginning. The in-between.
It’s the space after the door closes and before the next one opens. After the job ends, before the new one starts. After the relationship, before the healing feels complete. After the prayer, before the answer.
I’ll be honest: the in-between is where my faith gets tested the most. If you’re standing there right now, I want to share what’s helping me hold on.
When You Can’t See the Next Step
I like plans. I like knowing what’s next. So the in-between, with all its uncertainty, can make me anxious. I find myself trying to force the next chapter to start before it’s ready.
But I keep coming back to Proverbs 3:5–6: Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. Leaning not on my own understanding is exactly what’s hard when my understanding is all I can see.
What the In-Between Can Teach Us
It strips away what we were leaning on. When the familiar things are gone, we find out what we really put our trust in.
It makes space. You can’t pour something new into a cup that’s already full. Sometimes the emptiness is preparation.
It builds patience. Not the gritted-teeth kind, but a deeper kind, rooted in knowing you are held even when you don’t know where you’re going.
How I’m Practicing Trust Right Now
- Praying honestly, including the frustrated prayers. God can handle them.
- Writing down every small sign of provision, so I remember them when I forget.
- Doing the next right thing, even when I can’t see the whole path.
- Letting other people pray for me and with me.
For You, If You’re in the Middle
If you’re in your own in-between right now, I want you to know you’re not lost. You’re in a hallway, not a dead end. The next door is coming.
Until then, rest in this: you don’t have to see the whole staircase to take the first step. You only have to trust the One who does.
I’m praying for you in your in-between, friend. You are held, even here.
