Have you ever noticed how different you are on vacation?
You wake up without an alarm. You eat slowly. You take long walks just to see what’s around the corner. You read a whole book. You talk to strangers. You actually watch the sunset.
Then you come home, unpack the suitcase, and within a week it’s like the trip never happened. I know that feeling so well. But it doesn’t have to be that way, and I want to share how I bring a little of that island ease back home with me.
Why We’re Different When We Travel
On vacation, we give ourselves permission. Permission to slow down, to play, to rest without guilt. The place is new, but the permission is the real magic. And permission is something we can give ourselves anywhere.
Vacation Habits Worth Keeping
Eat one meal a day slowly. Sit down. No screens. Taste it. You’d never rush a meal overlooking the ocean, so why rush it at your own table?
Explore close to home. Walk a street you’ve never walked. Try the restaurant you always drive past. Be a tourist in your own town once a month.
Get outside first thing. On trips, I’m always out early to catch the morning light. At home, even five minutes on the porch with my coffee brings some of that feeling back.
Read for pleasure. Keep a novel on your nightstand, not just the books you think you should read.
Say yes to small adventures. A spontaneous drive, a new class, an invitation you’d normally turn down.
Keep the travel journal going. Write a few lines in the evening about what you noticed today. Everyday life has details worth remembering too.
Bring the Feeling Home
You don’t need a plane ticket to feel more alive. You need a little permission and a little intention. Your everyday life deserves some of the care you give your vacations.
So, which habit will you bring home first?
I hope a little of that sunshine follows you home and stays a while, friend.
