I’ve always been the strong one. The one people call. The one who figures it out. The one who says “I’m fine,” even when I’m not.
If you’re reading this, I have a feeling you might be the strong one too. So let me say what nobody told me for a long time: carrying everything by yourself isn’t strength. It’s just heavy.
Why Asking Feels So Hard
Many of us learned early that needing help made us a burden. Or that if we wanted something done right, we had to do it ourselves. Or that asking meant admitting we weren’t enough.
So we keep going. We keep carrying. Until one day we realize we’re exhausted and alone, surrounded by people who would have helped if we’d only let them.
Asking Is an Act of Trust
When you ask someone for help, you’re telling them, “I trust you with this. I trust you with me.” That’s not weakness. That’s intimacy. It builds the kind of relationships where people show up for each other.
And think about how you feel when someone you love asks you for help. Honored, right? Glad to be trusted. Other people can feel that way about you too.
Small Ways to Start
- Start with something small. A ride, a recipe, an opinion. Practice the muscle.
- Be specific. “Can you pick up groceries on Thursday?” is easier to say yes to than “I need help.”
- Accept offers. Next time someone says, “Let me know if you need anything,” actually let them know.
- Ask for professional help when you need it. Therapists, doctors, counselors and pastors exist for a reason. Using them is wisdom.
- Say thank you, not sorry. “Thank you for helping” instead of “Sorry to bother you.”
For the Strong Ones
You’ve held so much for so long. You’re allowed to put some of it down. You’re allowed to be held too.
Who could you ask for help this week? Write their name down. Then reach out. That might be the strongest thing you do all year.
Strong one, I see you. I hope this is the week you let someone carry a little of it with you.
